Welcome to Skookum Works

Our Story

My name is Jacob, and I am the founder and innovator behind our products here at Skookum Works.

I design products that are inspired by my experiences as an active member of our local Search and Rescue team, in Squamish, BC, Canada. Squamish is a mountain town nestled between Vancouver and Whistler and is known as the “outdoor recreation capital of Canada”. Squamish Search and Rescue is a non-profit organization made up of volunteers who dedicate countless hours to training and responding to over 100 calls per year. I am part of a few specialized disciplines including Helicopter External Transport Systems (H.E.T.S.), technical rope rescue, avalanche response and a drone operator.

The idea for our first product "The Knob Blocker" came to me after experiencing a scary moment during a H.E.T.S. rescue. I was hanging below a helicopter on a longline and couldn’t hear any radio communication. The volume dial had been bumped accidently to the lowest volume. I was completely unaware and for a short period I had lost communication with my team and the helicopter, creating a serious safety concern. When I got home, I began working on a solution. Once the first version of the guard was complete, I thought of a silly name and I started testing The Knob Blocker in the field.

My professional background is in IT infrastructure, and in my spare time I like to learn new things and solve problems. Tinkering has led me to gain experience using CAD modelling and 3D printing to build rapid prototypes, which has become very useful when experimenting with new design concepts and making our products. The Knob Blocker has gone through several iterations already. I am dedicated to making sure when an improvement can be made, the newest version is available immediately.

The beauty of 3D printing our products allows me to easily test prototypes in the field, listen to customer feedback, make improvements quickly and launch the new and improved versions as soon as they are available.

At the end of the day, my goal with Skookum Works is to make cool stuff that solves problems I encounter and have fun while doing it.
